Welcome back to Center Stage, where we look at the best performances across all of Marist’s sports teams and let you, the reader, vote on the top performance! After a year of pandemic-riddled seasons, we’re back to highlight four Red Foxes who stood out every week. Voting takes place on the Center Field social media pages.
Men’s Soccer: Four different Red Foxes scored in Marist’s 4-0 thumping of Howard on Saturday night at Tenney Stadium. Grad student Huib Achterkamp added his team-leading second goal in the 73rd minute and consistently made an impact on and off the ball. The Dutch defender also netted the game-winning goal in Marist’s win over Saint John’s on September 4.
Women’s Cross Country: Marist finished second as a team at Saturday’s Siena invitational. The team had four runners finish in the top 10. Redshirt freshman Tori Mariano was the fastest Red Fox, with an 18:52.2 mark.
Volleyball: Marist went 2-1 over the weekend at the Mason Invitational in Fairfax, VA. The Red Foxes won two exciting five-setters over Robert Morris and Morgan State on Saturday before falling to UNC Greensboro in straight sets on Sunday. Senior Madelyn Waumans had 20-plus kills in both of Marist’s wins. The outside hitter added 20 digs in the Robert Morris game for an impressive 20-20 performance.
Women’s Soccer: The Red Foxes left Maine with a 1-1 result against the Black Bears, the team’s first draw in nearly two years. Senior goalkeeper Natalie Kelchner saved nine of the 10 shots that came her way, helping the team avoid a road loss.
