Marist (5-6, 3-2 MAAC) lost 13-12 in overtime to defending MAAC champions Sacred Heart (8-2, 4-1 MAAC).
Sophomore midfielder Tim Kiely scored with eight seconds remaining to send it to overtime, and junior midfielder John Murray netted the winner with two seconds left in the opening overtime period for the Pioneers.
A back-and-forth overtime period led to multiple timeouts and a few big chances, but a turnover from Marist gave the hosts possession with 52 seconds left.
A timeout stopped the clock and allowed them to draw up a play. Graduate student Tucker Spencer’s shot with 21 seconds left went wide, but retention of the ball allowed SHU to find Murray.
Murray dodged junior defender Joshua Arneson and practically walked towards the crease as no help came, going high on a diving jump shot to beat Wacholder and Marist.
Freshman goalie Adam Wacholder made 12 saves for Marist, keeping his team in the game with multiple key stops. Junior midfielder Drew Anderson scored four and dished out an assist, marking his fifth straight game with two or more goals; Anderson scored 13 over that stretch and has 19 on the year.
Spencer, the Pioneers’ leading scorer, tallied a hat trick in the win. Murray had two, as did freshman midfielder Dom Basti and senior midfielder Declan Wilkie.
Sacred Heart, who’s only two losses on the year came to ranked opponents (Fairfield and Syracuse) received votes but did not crack the top 25 in the latest Inside Lacrosse poll.
Marist, who averaged just under 44 shots per game, put up just 34 today. The Red Foxes usually only allow 39 shots per game, but Sacred Heart’s 51 allowed too many opportunities in the end.
Sophomore attacker Collin Patrick scored his sixth hat trick of the year, including two goals, to spark a third-quarter run. Add an assist to that and he extends his point total to 46 on the year.
Senior faceoff man Dylan Bedell had a quiet first half, winning just five of the 13 faceoffs. A dominant second half had him win 11 of the 12 to give Marist some extra possessions.
The only extra man of the game came early, as senior midfielder Ryan Jones got one minute in the box for a cross-check. Sacred Heart capitalized behind redshirt-freshman attacker Matt Pepe. That goal knotted the game at 1-1 in the first quarter.
Freshman attacker Brady Dolan scored two goals today, giving the Red Foxes momentum with his goals in the second quarter.
Anderson opened the scoring, putting one past graduate student goalie Alex Pazienza just 25 seconds into the game. The Pioneers then scored five straight, ending the first quarter up four.
Pazeinza finished with four saves, a low number for a goalie averaging 10.8 per game over his teams’ 10 games.
Marist put together a 9-3 run over the next two quarters, tying the game and eventually taking the lead behind Patrick’s hat trick and two from sophomore attacker Steven Cain.
Sacred Heart entered the final frame down two, but three goals in the first five minutes gave them the lead.
Anderson tied it, and sophomore midfielder Sean Mullan gave Marist the lead, but poor defending gave Kiely a good look at goal.
In overtime, teams traded possessions until the final minute, as Sacred Heart had the last chance. Marist turned it over due to an offsides call. Murray took it to the rack and scored the winner for the Pioneers’ third overtime win this season.
Marist has two weeks off before hosting Manhattan for senior night. Manhattan sits at 3-1 in the MAAC and 5-4 on the year. The game is scheduled for Saturday, April 12, with opening faceoff at Tenney Stadium at 7 p.m.
