Men’s Lacrosse Survives Late Scare Against Mount St. Mary’s in Win

Marist (4-5, 2-1 MAAC) beat Mount St. Mary’s 13-12 despite four straight goals from The Mount in the last three minutes of the game.

Sophomore attacker Collin Patrick scored three goals and dished out a pair of assists, marking his fifth five-point game of the season. Freshman goalie Adam Wacholder saved a career-high 14 shots, stopping over half of The Mount’s 26 shots on goal.

Marist scored six straight in the second frame to carry a six-goal lead into the second half, although the Mountaineers scored nine goals to the Red Foxes’ four in the second half to close the gap.

Four Mountaineers (2-7, 0-3 MAAC) scored multiple goals, with sophomore attacker Brody Atkinson – entering play with nearly three goals a game, good for 25th in Division I – and graduate student midfielder Jack Smith grabbing a hat trick.

Sophomore goalie Bennett Wright saved 16 of Marist’s 29 shots on goal, keeping his team in it while the offense found its groove.

The Mount trailed 11-5 with under three minutes remaining in the third quarter, needing to score more goals than they’d scored up to that point simply to tie. Atkinson found two, freshmen midfielders Carter Quested – who finished with three assists – and Aidan Kilduff scored, and Smith completed his hat trick to bring the two sides closer.

Graduate student midfielder Josh Balcarcel continued his streak of one-point games, an unusual trend for him, as he assisted junior midfielder Drew Anderson. Sophomore attacker Steven Cain logged four points as he continued a solid season with two goals and two assists.

Marist’s faceoff duo of senior Dylan Bedell and freshman Josh Smith combined for 17 wins on 29 draws, with Bedell grabbing 13 of his 22 chances.

Neither team capitalized on extra-man opportunities, as the Mount missed all three of their chances while Marist went 0-2.

Patrick’s dominating performance started with a burst, assisting the opening goal while scoring the next one. A second assist put him at three points in five minutes. He did cool down, although the sophomore improved his total and is now up to the top 30 point-scorers per game in Division I. His assists per game total has him in the top 25 per game, sitting at 17 and 1.88 per game.

Marist’s 3-0 start to the game was erased shortly after as the Mount tied it, but when the Red Foxes erupted for six unanswered goals in 21 minutes to flip the game.

The Mount battled back for a long time, making a few comeback attempts before being shut down. One of those shutdowns was due to a pole goal from sophomore defender Michael Cassano, scoring his third goal of the season.

Marist’s schedule stays congested as the Red Foxes host Canisius on Wednesday, March 26. Canisius is 3-7 on the year although all three of their wins are in conference. The Griffins are the lone 3-0 team in the MAAC and sit atop the standings.

The game is set to begin at 3 p.m. at Tenney Stadium.
