Late Game Heroics Lead to Men’s Lacrosse Win Over Mount St. Mary’s

Marist men’s lacrosse scored the only goal in the last five minutes to come away with an 11-10 road win over Mount St. Mary’s. Sophomore midfielder Drew Anderson netted an acrobatic goal to give the Red Foxes the win.

The reigning MAAC champion Red Foxes (5-6, 2-4 MAAC) haven’t been themselves lately, losing several tight games as half of the team’s six losses have come by less than three goals.

Early on in the contest, a spectacular save from junior goalie Noble Smith led to an offensive push from the Red Foxes which led to senior attackman Joshua Balcarcel opening the scoring.

The Mount (1-11, 1-5 MAAC) shot out of a cannon to start the second quarter, scoring quickly. At the tail end of the second quarter, a defensive battle turned into an offensive barrage.

Mount St. Mary’s freshman attackman Brody Atkinson scored to even the score at two, but the scoring did not stop there. Graduate student attackman Cormac Giblin of The Mount and Balcarcel for Marist traded goals to tie the game at three.

Less than 20 seconds later, Atkinson weaved through the Marist defense and bounced one past Smith to put Mount St. Mary’s up one. The Red Foxes again answered quickly as freshman attackman Collin Patrick buried his second snipe of the game to bring the game level at 4.

To close out the first half, Mount graduate student midfielder Dan Bradley tallied two goals to put The Mount up two, but veteran defensive midfielder Keenan DaRaeve answered for Marist.

The Red Foxes entered the second half down one but outshot the Mount 23-18. This has been an issue for Marist all season long, and it continues today.

Marist junior attackman Jake Deacy bowled over a defender and fired one to tie the game at six.

Both defenses buckled down in the third period until Anderson painted the corner with a shot and put Marist up one.

Following Anderson’s missile, the Marist offense found a rhythm. Deacy recorded his second goal of the game after the Mount defense switched off.

While playing a man down, Mount sophomore attackman Kevin Whitty went five-hole on Smith.

At 2:09 of the third, the left-handed Deacy secured the hat trick and gave the Red Foxes more cushion as they led 9-7.

Marist needed to focus on defense and close out this game; something that has been a tall task for them this season.

Early in the fourth quarter, Whitty tried to re-ignite the fire for The Mount, scoring and cutting the deficit to one.

The equalizer came off the stick of Atkinson and another hat trick. His quick feet and strong hands allow him to fire away from pretty much anywhere around the net.

Mount St. Mary’s kept their foot on the gas pedal, and Atkinson buried his fourth goal of the day. Back-to-back goals from Atkinson in ten seconds put The Mount up by one.

As Marist lost their lead, freshman attackman Sean Mullen evened the score with 6:33 left on the clock. He drove strong down the middle of the field and unleashed a shot that found the back of the net.

An amazing kick-save from Smith gave Marist another key defensive stop, and Anderson willed his way to find the net once more and score the game-winner.

Next up for the Red Foxes is a home matchup against Siena on Wednesday, April 10. The opening faceoff in the nationally broadcasted matchup will begin at 8 p.m. at Tenney Stadium.
