Marist Women’s Soccer Loses Fourth Straight, Tirado Scores Late Goal in 2-1 Loss to Binghamton

On a hot and sunny Thursday afternoon, Marist women’s soccer (0-4) struggled to hold possession in its 2-1 loss to Binghamton at Tenney Stadium

Binghamton’s freshman defender Ale Victoriano was a difference maker for the Bearcats off the bench, getting involved in both of the team’s goals that led to the victory over the Red Foxes.

The last time these two teams faced off in 2022, the Red Fox head coach, Nicole Pacapelli Ciano, was an assistant coach for Binghamton women’s soccer. The Bearcats went on to go back-to-back American East conference finals.

Heading into the 2025 season, the Bearcats tied with the University of New Hampshire at first in the Preseason America East Coaches Poll, while Marist was ranked 10th in the MAAC. This year’s matchup started with continuous back-to-back possessions, but was highlighted by Binghamton’s five corners in a row within the first five minutes of play.

In the 15th minute, Binghamton freshman Mackenzie Brotherston and Marist sophomore midfielder Sophia DeJoia collide on the sidelines, sending both players out with injuries. After the injury, the Red Foxes gained the throw-in and failed to get past the pressing Binghamton defense.

Two minutes later, Binghamton stacked the box on offense, firing shots off the goalpost. While the Red Foxes ‘ defense scrambled with senior goalie Maddy Catalanotti on the ground after making a save. Binghamton found the top of the net, but was called back for offside.

With 10 minutes left in the half, Victoriano subbed in for the Bearcats.

Within a minute of being on the pitch, sophomore forward Jahkaya Davis found Victoriano off a send from junior defender Sophia Garofalo.

Alone in the middle of the box, Victoriano took advantage of the high-playing Red Fox defense and sent the ball inside the right near post for the first goal of the game.

As the first half concluded, Binghamton held more and more possession, with Marist ending the half with zero shots to the Bearcats’ 12.

The Red Foxes continued the second half with the same lineup, while Binghamton subbed in freshman goalie Bella Grace Dunn. The Bearcats came out of the half with energy, gained possession and immediately confused the Red Fox defense.

Junior forward Paige Luke passed to Davis, alone in the box. With Catalanotti off her line, Davis easily slipped the ball past her on the ground and into the far corner to give her team a 2-0 lead.

Marist scored its only goal of the game in the 52nd minute; senior captain Olivia Lindsay pressed the Binghamton defense on the edge of the box. Freshman Jiji Sweiss was nearby to help and touched it to sophomore forward Gabby Tirado for her first goal as a Red Fox.

The goal seemed to give Marist extra life. The Red Foxes added pressure on defense and continued pushing the ball in the midfield. The added intensity was not enough for the Red Foxes, who were outshot 14-4 and dropped their fourth straight game to open the season.

The Red Foxes continue their non-conference campaign on Sunday at 3 p.m. away at Holy Cross.
