Junior goalie Megan Morris led the way with 11 saves and Marist (1-0) held Binghamton’s (0-1) leading single season goal scorer, senior attack Emma Blloshmi, scoreless en route to a 10-6 win to open the season.
The Bearcats controlled the time of possession in the first half as senior defender Mckenna Kobler controlled seven out of eight draws, but they could not find the back of the net in the first period against a stifling Red Fox defense.
Sophomore midfielder Amelia Pirozzi scored no goals last season, but in her sophomore debut had four goals to help Marist to victory.
On the first two Bearcat possessions, Morris bailed out the Red Fox defense by saving two goals to keep Binghamton scoreless. On the ensuing Marist possession, junior attack Kate Gaven fought for the rebound off a save from sophomore goalie Emily Backlin and finished off the possession by scoring with her left.
The Red Foxes doubled their lead when freshman midfielder Megan Shanahan ripped one past Backlin for an eight meter score. The Bearcats won all three draws in the first 13 minutes of play but Morris did not let anything by her; she had five saves in the first period.
Marist did not hold a team scoreless in the first quarter all of last year but in their first match of the season they kept the door closed on Binghamton. The Red Foxes kept growing their lead with a goal from junior Madsion Leale to extend the score to 3-0 just 13 seconds into the second period.
After 17 minutes of scoreless lacrosse, the Bearcats finally broke the ice with two goals, one from sophomore midfielder Christiana Lauro and one from freshmen Sabrina Boyle. Binghamton continued finding the back of the net and took a 4-3 lead with an eight meter score from junior midfielder Mia Forte and a cross body shot from freshman defender Vivian Coburn.
After a 10-minute scoring drought, Marist answered the bell. Pirozzi ran right through the Bearcat defense and knocked in her first career goal.
Senior defender Mckenna Kobler kept her faceoff streak going, but Morris came through for Marist and denied a Bearcat eight meter. Senior attack Jesse Manger gave Marist the lead back with her first score of the season despite getting hit in the head.
Pirozzi became the first player with two goals when she scored again on an unassisted goal. Morris kept dominating; she ended the half with three straight eight meter stops as the Red Foxes came away with a 6-4 lead at the break.
11 seconds into the third period, Binghamton cut the lead down to 6-5. Senior attack Jess Robinson converted a goal off an assist from Blloshmi. Pirozzi and Gaven responded for Marist and pushed the Red Foxes to a three-goal lead as Pirozzi scored once more to notch a hat trick and Gaven scored off a strong drive.
Marist continued to find the back of the net with two more goals. Pirozzi found the back of the net for the fourth time and senior midfielder Catlin McNaboe picked up her first goal of the season.
The Bearcats tried to mount a comeback as junior attack Carla Curth glided through the Marist defense to cut the score to 10-6, but the Red Foxes held Binghamton to two scores in the second en route to their first win of the season.
Marist will look to extend their winning streak when they travel to Army on Tuesday. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m.
