Searching for Answers in Net, Women’s Lacrosse Drops Second Straight to Binghamton

Vestal, N.Y. – The Marist women’s lacrosse team lost their second straight game under head coach Keith Detelj to Binghamton University 20-9 on Sunday afternoon.

These two squads matched up last year, as the Bearcats won handily at Tenney Stadium, 18-7. Marist tried to flip the script, but today ended with a similar story.

Marist graduate attacker Kerri Gutenberger tallied her first hat trick of the season, with senior attacker Maddie Schrader scoring two herself. But junior midfielder Abigail Carroll’s six goals, along with two other hat tricks for the Bearcats made it a comfortable win.

The Red Foxes (0-2) traveled to the frigid Vestal, New York, for the 17th all-time matchup with the Bearcats (1-2). With graduate student attacker Kelly Trotta out due to injury, Marist needed someone else to step up.

“We’re hoping there’s good news on that. We don’t think it’s anything serious,” said Detelj. “We were missing [Trotta], of course, but there were a couple players that really stood out, like Maddie [Schrader] stepped up and found a couple goals for herself.”

Freshman attacker Greta Govoni got the starting nod after her first collegiate goal against the University of New Hampshire. Govoni didn’t disappoint, scoring one and assisting another.

Detelj changed his starting goalkeeper after giving up 19 in their season opener. Sophomore Morgan Carroll made her first start of the season after her brief appearance in the lopsided defeat.

Senior midfielder Delaney Hayes scored the first goal of the game for Marist in the first minute, but Binghamton scored two goals within 20 seconds of each other to grab the lead.

With three green cards in two minutes, the Foxes fell into a four-goal deficit. The offense looked stagnant, and the defense vulnerable.

Marist took the initiative in the second quarter. Govoni wrapped around the net and snuck her first of the contest by senior goalie Sofie Salgado. Gutenberger joined the action, netting two quick goals and making it 6-5 for the Bearcats.

Binghamton silenced the Red Fox attack, putting two quick ones in on fastbreak opportunities. Detelj was forced to make a decision and pulled Carroll with five minutes left in the half. Senior goalie Miranda Lopes entered the game but let two in just a minute apart.

“We’re going to try to put the goalie that looks like they’re doing their best and training [well] over the days before,” said Detelj.

Binghamton was in total control at the end of the first half. Carroll tallied five goals, while senior attacker Madison Murphy had a hat trick. A 7-0 Bearcat run put Marist down 13-5 at the break.

Both teams traded goals to start the third quarter, with Gutenberger notching her first hat trick of the season off a dump-off pass from Govoni. Binghamton scored not long after to make the lead double digits, which kept the clock running.

“I think we’re learning a lot about ourselves, and we’re learning that composure is a thing that we need to work on,” said Gutenberger. “Going forward, just having our composure and playing our game is going to be key for us.”

The remainder of the half played out the same way. Marist’s offense could not get anything going, with costly turnovers killing any potential scoring opportunity. Another goalie change encapsulated the lackluster performance, with freshman Megan Morris seeing the rest of the game out for the Red Foxes.

For the second straight week, the offense could only put up nine goals, while the defense remained uninspiring while looking for answers at the goalie position.

Detelj and the Red Foxes have their biggest test of the season next week. On the road for the second straight week, Marist will travel across the country to take on the University of Oregon.

“It’s exciting. [The] players want to step up to that challenge when you play on a little bit of a bigger stage, and I know that we’re going to make sure that we sit up and prepare and go after them,” said Detelj. “Every game anybody can win that day. So we’re looking forward to competing.”

Marist will be facing the Ducks for the first time since 2016, with only one win all-time in the matchup. Gametime is set for 5 p.m. EST.
