Marist men’s basketball head coach John Dunne signed a multi-year contract extension Thursday afternoon, according to Director of Athletics Tim Murray.
“I am grateful to have my contract extended,” Dunne said in a Marist Athletics press release. “My wife, Marlene, and I are excited to continue our lives here in the Hudson Valley. I appreciate the support and confidence from Director of Athletics Tim Murray, Executive Vice President Geoffrey Brackett, and President Kevin Weinman. I look forward to working toward bringing sustainable success here at Marist and ultimately a championship to our passionate and loyal fan base.”
Dunne completed his seventh year in Poughkeepsie in 2024-25, winning 20 games for the fifth time in program history. The Red Foxes have won 38 games in their last two seasons, the most in two years since 2006-07 and 2007-08.
“With the college basketball landscape seeing such transformational change, Marist is fortunate to have John Dunne leading our program,” Murray said in the release. “John is an experienced head coach who values a true collegiate student-athlete experience while preparing his athletes to compete for championships. I am excited for the continued growth of our basketball program under John’s leadership.”
Dunne arrived in Poughkeepsie in 2018 after 12 seasons at Saint Peter’s. In seven seasons, Marist has amassed a 96-110 overall record and a 63-73 MAAC record under Dunne’s leadership. In 2023-23, Marist reached the MAAC championship for the first time in program history as the No. 11 seed. Star big man Patrick Gardner has since played in the NBA G League after one season at Marist.
In 2023-24, Marist won 18 games, the most in 16 years, and followed that with 20 wins in 2024-25 to revive a fanbase waiting for men’s basketball success. Sophomore guard Josh Pascarelli earned All-MAAC first team honors, the first Red Fox to make the first team since 2007.
This season ended on a sour note, with the Red Foxes losing their last five games, including being knocked out of the MAAC Championships by the eventual champions, No. 6 seed Mount St. Mary’s, in the quarterfinals. Pascarelli committed to Colorado State after entering the transfer portal on March 24.
Per Marist University Policy, details of the contract are not disclosed.
