Marist men’s lacrosse falls to 0–2 as the team continues to search for its first win of the season. The Red Foxes traveled to New Haven to face the Yale Bulldogs, but the Ivy League powerhouse was just too much to handle. Yale used a seven-goal third quarter to pull away in the second half, 15–9.
Although Marist remains winless, junior midfielder Sean Mullan’s offensive prowess was on full display. The junior accounted for five of his team’s nine goals, keeping the offense afloat while poor defense haunted the Red Foxes all night. The junior has played like the number one option so far this season, carrying the load on the offensive end.
Last season, the Red Foxes’ biggest weakness was in goal. They cycled through three goalies, and they all struggled at some point during the year.
Freshman goalie Richie Metzger got the start on Tuesday and shone early. The Long Island keeper brought energy and did not show any weakness in the first half. Metzger is a bigger player, listed at 5’11” and 245 pounds, but he had no issue stopping Yale’s low shots. Metzger finished with nine first-half saves, keeping Marist in the game.
The second half told a different story as defensive issues permitted doorstep goal after doorstep goal for the Bulldogs. Despite the miscues, Metzger finished with fourteen saves.
Early on, Marist kept it close, but Yale came out flying in the second quarter. A 2-1 Marist lead quickly became 7-2 Yale. It seemed to be getting late early, but the Red Foxes went on a run of their own, scoring four straight to make it 7-6.
Mullan scored two of his five goals during that span, along with one by junior attack Collin Patrick. Patrick was named the preseason MAAC Player of the Year, but has gotten off to a slow start this season. He scored just one goal on nine shots in this game, giving him two total goals on the season.
Senior midfielder Drew Anderson added two second-half goals of his own, but it was not enough for Marist.
After Marist got within one, Yale’s offense went to work once again. They ended the quarter on a 7–0 run, putting the score at 14–6. Yale freshman attackman Sean Grogan led the way with four goals, as Marist could not seem to find an answer for him. With no momentum, Marist struggled to clear the ball and committed multiple turnovers that led to goals.
Although Marist tried to chip away, it was too little, too late. A 14-6 game became 15-9, as Yale’s defense locked down and closed out the win. Yale improved to 1-1 on the season, while Marist will look to pick up win No. 1 this Saturday at Binghamton. Faceoff is set for noon.
