In its final two non-conference matchups, Marist women’s lacrosse saw its losing streak extend to seven on a west coast trip this past weekend. The Red Foxes lost 15-4 to UC Davis and 18-10 to the University of California Berkeley as their overall record dipped to 1-7.
In the first game, Marist got out to a slow start and struggled to match the intensity of a UC Davis team that entered having won three of its last four matchups.
Sophomore attacker Ava Horrocks got the scoring started for the Aggies less than two minutes into the game. Junior midfielder Lauren Picardi and senior attacker Jane Fox added goals of their own to extend the lead to 3-0 with 4:26 left in the first quarter
It took until 3:28 left in the quarter for Marist to find the back of the net when senior midfielder Amelia Perozzi fired a shot from the front right of the net that cut the deficit to two.
The Red Foxes failed to capitalize on the momentum as UC Davis dominated in the second quarter and outscored Marist 6-0.
Fox spearheaded the Aggies’ offensive explosion; she found the back of the net twice and assisted on two more goals. Penalties also haunted the Red Foxes who surrendered goals on a free position shot and a player up opportunity sending them into halftime down 9-1.
The Red Foxes continued to struggle in the third quarter — they amassed only two shots on goal in the period.
Sophomore midfielder Amelia Pirozzi scored her second goal of the day bringing the score to 11-2 with 6:42 remaining in the quarter but a free-position goal from Picardi followed by another goal from Fox just over a minute later stifled any hope of a comeback for the Red Foxes.
Despite some late offensive light — Pirozzi secured her third goal to complete a hat trick — the Aggies went into cruise control and ended the game on top with a 15-4 victory.
The second and final game of the Red Foxes trip out west began with what looked like a completely different team for the Red Foxes.
Facing off against a struggling California Golden Bears squad, the Red Foxes found offensive success early creating a back and forth first quarter. Junior attacker Kathryn Staker opened the scoring for the Red Foxes at 11:20 to give Marist an early 1-0 lead, but California senior attacker Courtney Wong responded less than a minute later with her 17th goal of the season to tie the game at one.
A similar pattern followed a little over two minutes later when junior midfield/attacker Anne Shine gave the Red Foxes the lead just to be matched less than one minute later by sophomore attacker Ashleigh Masterson.
The Marist depth began to shine as goals from junior midfield/attacker Gabby Kingston and junior attacker Kate Gaven gave Marist a two goal lead that they held until the end of the quarter.
The Red Foxes carried their momentum into the second quarter. Junior goalie Megan Morris made several saves to help the Red Foxes maintain their two goal lead heading into halftime 7-5.
California opened the second half with a goal from senior attacker Josie Lillquist at 14:23. Pirozzi, however, answered quickly for the Red Foxes, extending the lead to 8-6.
Despite the two-goal lead, the Golden Bears began to sustain possessions and put pressure on the Marist defense. The dam eventually cracked when sophomore attacker Alina Hsu found the back of the net with 7:05 remaining in the quarter to mark the beginning of what became a 10-0 run for the Golden Bears.
Soon after the goal from Hsu, junior attacker Emily Moes and Wong each scored a goal to erase the Red Foxes lead and put Cal in front.
The momentum carried into the fourth quarter for the Golden Bears as senior attacker Brynn Gallagher, senior attacker Avery Hoeft, sophomore midfielder Willow Cyr, junior midfielder Katie Bloomer and Lillquist all scored goals bringing the score to 16-8 with 7:32 remaining in the game.
By the time Gaven finally scored for the Red Foxes with 5:39 remaining, Cal had turned a back-and-forth game into a comfortable lead en route to an 18-10 victory.
The Red Foxes will look to snap their seven game skid as they open MAAC play in a home matchup with Rider on Saturday. The game is slated for 1 p.m.
