Frisbee Dominates Regional Tournament

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Marist Ultimate Frisbee team capped off their impressive fall season last weekend, winning the mixed regionals tournament in dominant fashion. To win, Marist defeated Brandeis, Wesleyan, Providence, Hampshire, Bard, RPI and then SUNY New Paltz 10-6 in the final to finish the tournament 7-0.

The tournament’s championship trophy was not the only hardware that the team brought home, as senior Lindsay Trobel was named the women’s MVP of the tournament.

“I definitely believe this is the most hardworking, spirited, and most talented team we’ve ever had—at least in my 4 years at Marist,” Trobel said. “And our captains really push us to be the best we can be on and off the field while still having fun and we wouldn’t have won without their dedication to the team.”

This year’s team appears to be the most talented ultimate team Marist has ever had, and the results certainly speak for themselves.

“It is easy to see this team is special,” said team captain John Sasso. “As long as we stay within ourselves and continue to give 110%, I don’t see any team that can stop us.”

This was Marist’s third tournament victory in as many attempts. The team finished the fall season undefeated, and look to continue their dominance in the spring, which brings some uncertainty as the team will move from co-ed to separate men’s and women’s teams. Despite the change, Sasso says both teams continue to strive for the same goal: making it to nationals.

“Even though the mixed team split, our captain John has really stressed the fact that we are still one unit that supports each other,” said Trobel. “We’re very fortunate and excited that we have enough girls this year to field a women’s team for the spring season. We have a lot of depth and talent on the women’s side, as well as the men’s side.”

It is this very enthusiasm and determination that leaves the impression this team is primed for continued success in the highly anticipated upcoming spring season.
