Men’s basketball player Tyler Sagl will not be returning to the Red Foxes this upcoming season. The 6-foot-5 sharpshooting guard has transferred to Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada.
Sagl, a native of Burlington, Ontario, Canada will play in his home country for the Ryerson Rams of the Ontario University Athletics conference. Before playing at Marist, Sagl played at Lincoln Prep in Hamilton, Ontario for two seasons and was named an Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association Second-Team All-Star in both years. He announced his intention to transfer from Marist due to “personal reasons” in August, per A.J. Martelli of the Poughkeepsie Journal.
Sagl appeared in every game last season, starting in the final 23. His 8.5 points per game tied for the fourth highest mark on the team and the highest mark among MAAC freshmen. The freshman made 1.8 triples per game on 36.5 percent shooting from beyond the arc, which ranked second and fourth on the team respectively. He earned MAAC Rookie of the Week honors in late January and was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team, the first Red Fox to receive the honor since Brian Parker in the 2015-16 campaign.
Marist, coming off an overall record of 7-23 and an in-conference record of 6-14 last season and now without one of its best shooters and young players, begins its season against Niagara at the McCann Arena on December 12.
