Ricardo Wright and Caitlin Weimar each earned MAAC Rookie of the Week for Marist’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams respectively.
Wright secured his first rookie of the week nod after a solid series against Niagara. He averaged 17.5 points per game over the weekend and shot eight-for-15 from three-point range. He scored 10 points in the final 5:12 of Marist’s 63-61 triumph over the Purple Eagles on January 1. The next day, in Marist’s 86-72 loss, Wright scored a career-high 19 on six-for-11 shooting. He is the second men’s basketball newcomer to take top rookie honors after Hakim Byrd won three weeks ago.
Weimar secured her fourth rookie of the week award after notching her second career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in yesterday’s 69-50 win over Quinnipiac. She is averaging 12 points and 8 rebounds per game so far this season and has won the award in every week Marist played at least one game. Weimar looks well on her way to winning MAAC Rookie of the Year. Last year’s winner, Manhattan’s Emily LaPointe, won rookie of the week eight times during the 2019-20 season. In one month of play Weimar is already halfway to that total. She joins Marist greats like Rebekah Hand, Erica Allenspach, and Rachelle Fitz as Red Foxes to win four MAAC Rookie of the Week titles.
Marcus Hammond of Niagara and Lou Lopez-Senechal from Fairfield took MAAC Player of the Week honors.
The Marist Women play later today against Quinnipiac. The Men will be back in action this Saturday when they begin a two-game series on the road at Monmouth.
