Women’s Lacrosse Dominates Manhattan for First Conference Win of the Season

The Marist women’s lacrosse team handled Manhattan on Sunday afternoon to capture their first MAAC Conference win of the season, 15-9.

Marist graduate student attacker Kerri Gutenberger nabbed her fifth hat trick of 2024 in the first quarter. Fellow graduate student attacker Olivia Arntsen had her second hat trick of the season, followed by her fourth multi-assist game.

Freshman goalie Megan Morris had her best performance of the season for Marist, saving 10 of 19 shots faced.

Manhattan senior midfielder Julianna Iovine and junior attacker Ava Fernandes had hat tricks as the only multi-goal scorers for the Jaspers.

The last time the Red Foxes hit the field, they finished their non-conference schedule with a 17-3 loss to UConn.

Marist (2-6, 1-0 MAAC) traveled to New York City to take on the Jaspers (3-6, 0-1 MAAC) for the first game of conference play; rain pushed the contest back, which was initially slated for Saturday. After winning only one game during their non-conference schedule, the Red Foxes looked to come out swinging for the next phase of the season.

Marist started the game on a roll; Arntsen and Guttenberger highlighted a 7-0 run in the first quarter, their longest of the season. Gutenberger converted a hat trick with 13 seconds remaining in the opening period.

A stalwart effort in net by Morris – encapsulated by five saves – gave Marist their largest lead all year heading into the second.

The Jaspers had no answer for the Red Foxes’ offensive, as senior and sophomore midfielders Delaney Hayes and Caitlin McNaboe found their stride to start the second period. Graduate student attacker Kelly Trotta added her name to the scoresheet, putting Marist up a domineering 10-0 with 8:13 remaining in the first half.

Manhattan found life behind Iovine’s free-position goal at the 6:28 mark, but Marist did not falter. They took a 10-goal lead into halftime with the game entirely in their hands.

The Foxes continued their commanding play as Arntsen completed her hat trick at the 7:18 mark of the third quarter. Manhattan responded with two goals in the period, but Marist remained in control.

The final 15 minutes played out entirely differently. Manhattan came alive down the stretch, outscoring the Foxes 6-2.

Iovine converted a hat trick with 2:50 remaining, good for her second of the season. Twenty seconds later, Fernandes tallied a hat trick behind a six-goal quarter for the Jasper offense.

Marist remained steadfast to close it out, as they used the dominance of the first three quarters to hang on to a six-goal lead to take their second win of the season.

Eight different Red Foxes scored in the balanced effort, demonstrating the chemistry they developed during their arduous non-conference schedule.

The Red Foxes return home to Tenney Stadium this Wednesday, March 27, as they host last-place Quinnipiac. Gametime is slated for 3 p.m.
