Marist Water Polo Sweeps MAAC Play in Maryland

Marist water polo extended their win streak to four on Friday, defeating Siena 20-9 and Mount St. Mary’s 17-12.

The Red Foxes (15-14; 4-1 MAAC) maintained their first-place standing in the blue division with a 4-1 MAAC record, while Wagner remains undefeated leading the red division.

Graduate student utility Shinae Carrington led the Red Foxes in the team’s 11-point victory over Siena (7-15; 0-7 MAAC), recording four goals and two assists.  Within the first five minutes of play, the utility had recorded two goals. The second came off of a Marist powerplay, giving Marist a two-point lead.

The Red Foxes controlled the first quarter, outscoring the Saints eight to two, with six different Red Foxes contributing a goal.

By halftime, Marist led 12-6 and never allowed Siena back into the game; the Red Foxes ultimately went on to win 20-9.

Marist’s next game was against the home team in Mount St. Mary’s (13-11; 3-4 MAAC). The Mount opened the game by scoring at the 7:31 mark, with the goal coming from senior defensive reserve Ana Luisa Cotta off a pass from junior utility Rebecca Valentine.

Marist did not obtain their first goal until the 3:00 minute mark, with junior attacker Rachel Dean connecting on the setup from fellow junior attacker Liana Hunt. Dean then found the back of the net again with 6 seconds left in the first quarter, making the score 2-2 heading into the second.

The Red Foxes outscored The Mount 4-2, in the second quarter giving Marist a 6-4 lead at the half.

Dean and sophomore utility Paige Naegle led a Marist offensive explosion in the second half; the duo ended the game with five goals and two assists apiece.

The Red Foxes scored seven goals in the third quarter, with four of them coming from Naegle. The utility also tallied two assists in the third.

Dean increased the Marist lead to five with 4:20 left in the third off a pass from Naegle. A minute later, Dean assisted Naegle for her third score of the quarter.

Going into the fourth, Marist led 3-8 and held on to win 17-12 for their second win of the day in Maryland.

The Red Foxes will continue MAAC play this Saturday against La Salle University (12-14; 2-3 MAAC) and no. 21 LIU (18-5; 6-1 MAAC).
