Women’s Lacrosse Ends Season in Maryland With a Loss to the Mountaineers

In their final game of the season, the recently eliminated Red Foxes lost to Mount St. Mary’s, 19-9.

Mount St. Mary’s senior attacker Mackenzi Furlong and junior midfielder Madison Harmening scored four goals each. Sophomore midfielder Logan Cook notched her first collegiate hat trick in the victory.

Graduate student attacker Kelly Trotta scored four goals and her seventh hat trick of the season, and Graduate student and senior attackers Oliva Arntsen and Maddie Schrader scored two apiece to lead the way for the Red Foxes.

With nothing to lose for either team, Marist (3-13, 2-7 MAAC Conference) tried to play freely in their swan song. Losing four graduate students and potentially three seniors, the Red Foxes looked to play with heart and determination for each other one last time.

Mount St. Mary’s (7-9, 4-4 MAAC Conference) got things started early; two goals in 15 seconds of play put Marist in an early deficit.

After being tripped up in front of the crease, Arntsen converted her fourth free-position goal of the season a minute later.

Although down early, the Red Foxes were flying around the field. Active sticks by the defense led to multiple ground ball fast breaks and a caused turnover, which they did not capitalize on.

Five different goal scorers for the Mountaineers highlighted their outburst. Senior attacker Christina Haspert and Furlong found the back of the net twice to lead Marist 7-2 heading into the second quarter.

On a physical defensive possession by sophomore defender Sophia Georgopoulos, another caused turnover led to a fast break opportunity. Trotta fired a side-arm rocket that smacked the net to trim the lead to 7-3.

Trotta kept attacking the net ferociously; another side-arm missile blew past sophomore goalie Ashlyn Watkins for her seventh hat trick of the season.

For the first time since their late March contest with Manhattan, it looked as though Marist would shut out the Mountaineers in the second frame. With two seconds left, Harmening threw up a prayer that ricocheted off a teammate and past freshman goalie Megan Morris to lead 8-4.

Two quick goals by the Red Fox attack cut the Mountaineers’ lead to two in the first two minutes. Mount St. Mary’s stopped the bleeding momentarily with a goal from sophomore midfielder MK Allingham, but Trotta was inevitable. A beautiful touch pass from Schrader found her stick, and Trotta did the rest, scoring her fourth goal of the afternoon.

To repay the favor, Trotta found Schrader cutting across the defense a minute later; she turned and fired for her second of the game to put Marist behind 9-8.

As soon as Marist got back in it, Mount St. Mary’s stepped on the gas. A hat trick for Furlong followed by an assist extended the lead back to three before the media break.

A 3-1 run by the Mount increased their lead to 14-9 with one final quarter remaining in Marist’s season.

Harmening scored the first two goals of the quarter for her second straight four-goal game, handing Marist their largest deficit of the day.

The Mountaineers’ attack was just too much to handle in the final frame; the game simply got out of hand after Marist’s initial push in the third.

With that, the 2024 Marist women’s lacrosse season came to a close. Following their fourth straight losing season, the team will look very different come 2025. With some bright spots in the freshman class, highlighted by Morris, attacker Greta Govoni, and midfielders Kate Chiarlo and Gabby Kingston, they may be leaned on to try and help Marist be competitive in the MAAC next year.
