Marist Hockey Rebounds to Split Clarkson Series

Marist club hockey took on Clarkson University for the second game of a weekend double-header, looking to rebound after an 11-0 crushing defeat to the Golden Knights on Friday.

The Red Foxes (3-2) played perfectly in the bounce-back win. Junior goalkeeper Andrew Schauder got the start and stabilized the Red Foxes’ performance in the net, and the Red Fox offense dismantled the Golden Knights’ defense in the third period to take the match 3-1 and split the weekend series.

Defenses reigned supreme in the first period, with both the Red Foxes and the Golden Knights failing to generate consistent offense or odd-man rushes. Marist head coach Anthony LoBianco emphasized this for his unit—controlling the game through their defense—something that was not executed on Friday.

The game remained knotted up at zero through two periods of play. The Red Foxes and Golden Knights played clean games, minimizing penalties and power plays.

Marist finally got the chance they were waiting for halfway through the third period. After a series of shots, junior forward Tyler Stoneman slapped in the lead-taking goal from close range, breaking the stalemate 1-0.

The Red Foxes’ offense caught fire, as not even two minutes later, Marist struck again. In a two-on-one against the keeper, sophomore forward Zachary Taylor crossed it to junior forward Kyle Butchyk, who delivered a strike to tack on another goal to their lead, 2-0.

With the Foxes now leading by two with three minutes remaining in the contest, the Golden Knights opted to go all-out on an offensive approach, leaving no one in the net. After the Red Foxes took a faceoff, senior forward and team captain Christian Wilde saw his opportunity, and launched a rocket from the middle of the ice, sailing into an empty net to give Marist a hat trick in the third period.

Clarkson responded with a late goal from forward Brigham Dubrey, but with only forty seconds remaining in the game, it proved to be worth very little.

The Red Foxes’ showed superb resilience in the road win, and will continue their road trip, traveling out of state to take on Central Connecticut State University on Oct. 4.
