Marist men’s lacrosse (3-5, 1-1 MAAC) lost 12-10 to Delaware (4-3, 0-1 CAA) on Wednesday despite keeping the Blue Hens within striking distance throughout. Delaware scored five in the fourth, pulling ahead with no eyes on the rearview and preventing a Marist comeback.
Goals came flying in the second half after a 5-2 first-half Delaware lead. Marist scored eight, outscoring the hosting Blue Hens by one, including five of their own in the final frame.
Sophomore attacker Collin Patrick scored two goals and dished out a pair of assists for Marist, staying hot and improving his season points total to 31. Eight Red Foxes scored, including a pair from junior midfielder Drew Anderson.
Delaware rifled off 52 shots at freshman goalie Adam Wacholder, who saved 12 in his third career start. 12 saves is a new career-high for the freshman, who earned the starting spot mid-season. Delaware’s shot total is a season-high, although their 24 shots on goal are among their season lows.
Blue Hens junior attacker Brendan Powers scored his 12th goal in two games, netting five after scoring seven against Towson in Delaware’s CAA opener.
Marist struggled on the clear, missing nine chances despite entering the game with 15 failed attempts over seven games. The Blue Hens came into the game with the fourth-best faceoff percentage in Division I and proved it, winning 20 of the 25.
This matchup marks the first time the two sides have faced off since 2023 when the Blue Hens took down Marist 25-10 in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Marist drops to 0-8 against Delaware all-time.
Marist fired 33 shots, putting 20 on net in a solid offensive performance. Graduate student goalie Kevin Ellington is top-five in Division I in both save percentage and saves per game, showing an offensive performance from the Red Foxes they can take positives from. Ellington made 10 saves on 20 shots on goal.
Both teams did not take care of the ball, committing a combined 39 turnovers with Marist finishing with one more. Delaware forced 10 turnovers, most on clears, limiting the Red Foxes’ offensive possessions when it mattered most.
Delaware came out firing in the third quarter, adding 15 shots to their 27 from the first half. Only two found the back of the net, though. A much smaller number of 11 led to their dominant five-goal fourth quarter. Five goals from Marist matched that but the Red Foxes could not get enough stops trailing by two heading into the final frame.
Despite being poor with the ball, neither team committed many fouls. Delaware capitalized on one of their two man-up chances, with Marist failing on their lone opportunity.
Graduate student midfielder Josh Balcarcel was quiet throughout the match, scoring only one on two shots. Anderson, senior attacker Jake Deacy and sophomore attacker Steven Cain all fired five shots each.
Freshman faceoff specialist Josh Smith came in for senior Dylan Bedell, although the pair found little success. Marist’s faceoff duo has been steady throughout the first half of the year, winning over half of their draws.
The Red Foxes move to their full MAAC schedule. Marist travels to take on Mount St. Mary’s for a noon start time on Saturday, March 22.
