Marist Women’s Lacrosse Explodes Offensively Behind Shine’s Six Goals

The Marist women’s lacrosse team exploded for their best offensive game in five years, dismantling the Rider Broncs 18-12 for a strong start to MAAC play.

Marist (2-8, 1-0 MAAC) had not scored 18 or more goals since 2019 against Canisius. This marks the highest-scoring game under head coach Keith Detelj’s tutelage.

Sophomore midfielder Anne Shine put up a performance Marist had not seen in years, notching a career-high six goals in the win, the most since Kelly Trotta in 2023. Overall, Marist had three players score three or more goals—a testament to the “share the ball” style offense Detelj emphasized in the pre-season.

The Broncs (4-5, 0-1 MAAC) were led by senior attacker Selena Carrington and redshirt junior attacker Katie Walsh, each with twenty or more goals on the season. They each displayed their prowess, with Carrington reaching the five-goal mark and Walsh earning herself a hat trick.

With such a high-scoring game for both sides, naturally, the goalkeeper numbers were subpar. Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Morris only had four saves alongside the 12 goals she allowed, while two Rider goalkeepers combined for only three saves and 18 allowed.

The Red Foxes looked the best they had offensively all season in the first period. After Carrington scored two goals as a part of a Broncs 3-2 lead, Marist put together an incredible offensive stretch.

Sophomore attacker and team leader in points, Kate Gaven, responded immediately to Carrington with a quick goal of her own to equalize. Shine carried the momentum forward with her second of the period for Marist to take its first lead of the contest, 4-3.

After Gaven notched another goal to cap a quick 3-0 run, Broncs head coach Evan Mager had seen enough, pulling redshirt junior goalie Jamie Kubach for freshman goalie Avery May with two minutes to go in the first period.

It did not turn the tides, as junior midfielder Caitlin McNaboe got involved with a goal of her own to end the period 6-3 in favor of the Foxes.

The run continued into the second frame, as Gaven completed an early first-half hat trick for a 8-3 lead. With May now surrendering three straight goals, Kubach was re-inserted into the goalie spot.

Walsh, the team leader in goals with 25, finally made her presence known for the Broncs, putting one in to spark a run. After three straight Rider scores, Carrington completed a first-half hat trick of her own, shrinking the Marist lead to one, 8-7.

Marist steeled themselves, as Shine became the second Marist player to earn a hat trick—her second of the season—and McNaboe added her second goal; Rider scored as the second period closed, making the score 10-8.

The third period was much quieter in contrast to the explosive first two, with only five goals split between the two teams—as opposed to the nine goals each period prior had.

Unsurprisingly, Shine and Gaven highlighted the Marist attack, each scoring their fourth goal of the game to outscore Rider 4-1. Senior midfielder Alana Tavares and senior midfielder Chloe Birckhead chipped in their second scores as well. Carrington continued her spectacular game for the Broncs with her fourth score but was Rider’s only contributor as they entered the fourth down 14-9.

Marist ripped off another 4-0 run to start the final frame, backed by two goals from Shine to give her six for the game and another from McNaboe to give her a hat trick. Trailing 18-9, the Broncs went on a late run of their own, with two scores from Walsh to net a hat trick, and Carrington reaching five for the game, but it was too late as the Broncs fell 18-12.

The Red Foxes will look to build on this tone-setting MAAC game as they travel to New Rochelle next week to conclude their five-game road trip against Iona.
