Marist Water Polo Sweeps Wolverine Invitational Extending Win Streak to Seven

Marist water polo continues to prove to be a top 25 team in the nation extending their win streak to seven. With victories over Salem University, Pomona-Pitzer and Saint Francis University. 

The Red Foxes hold a 17-8 overall record with a 2-1 record in the MAAC. The team opened the Wolverine Invitational with a 19-8 win over Salem. 

Marist opened the game with sophomore attack Kendell DeBeer winning the first possession sprint for Marist. 

DeBeer played with aggression throughout the game, setting the pace of the matchup alongside senior Ella Baugmgarten in the first period. Recording the teams first two goals of the game. 

Ending the first period of play sophomore Kara Wicht scored on a penalty shot to tie the score at two. 

Marist controlled the game from the start of the second period. The Red Foxes were able to set up on offense, moving the ball and creating gaps in the Salem defense. 

Senior attack Rachel Dean and sophomore utility Alyssa Mullane had standout performances for Marist in the second period. Contributing two goals and three assists, outsourcing the Tigers 5-3. 

Marist outscored the Tigers in both the third and the forth, with the Red Foxes scoring six goals in the third and leaving Salem scoreless. 

Junior goalie Ines Sanchez continued to be a back bone force for the Red Foxes, ending the matchup with a .538% save percentage. 

Marist played aggressively on both offense and defense. Forcing Salem to turnover the ball over  ten times throughout the four periods of play. 

Sophomore Kara Wicht led the offense for the Tigers, with three assists and two goals. Despite Wicht’s effort, Salem was not able to combat the Red Foxes attack. Marist highlighted their offensive depth making full substitutions, with freshman attack Angelena Peterson recording her first career hat trick as a Red Fox in the 19-8 victory over Salem. 

The Red Foxes continued their momentum into their second game on Saturday against Pomona-Pitzer defeating the Sagehens. 

DeBeer remained aggressive in the pool leading the team with five goals in the 12-8 victory to close out Saturday in Ann Arbor. 

Marist gained control of the game in the second period out scoring the Sagehens by four goals. Pomona-Pitzer made an attempt for a late push in the fourth but Sanchez held down the Marist lead recording nine saves. 

The Red Foxes ended the weekend in Michigan against Saint Francis University. Marist showed their offensive and defensive prowess, showcasing the depth of the Red Fox bench. 

Ten different players got on the board for Marist with sophomore Samantha Bentley leading the charge with five goals. 

Junior utility Paige Naegle added two goals and two assists of her own. Padilla led the team in assists with four. 

Marist stands at 21st in the nation, continuing to build play on both offense and defense. Dominating opponents in transition and penetrating opposing defenses, finding open space to make plays. 

The Red Foxes will continue MAAC play on Saturday, March 29 in Emmitsburg, Maryland. With a game at nine against The Mount (14-8 overall, 3-2 MAAC) and then continuing play at one against Iona (14-16 overall, 6-5 MAAC).
