Marist water polo split Saturday with a victory over Mount St. Marys and a narrow loss to Iona later in the day.
The Red Foxes started Saturday’s play in Maryland at 9:30 a.m., extending their win streak to eight.
Senior captain attack Rachel Dean, showcased her leadership in the pool leading Marist with five goals in the 14-9 victory over The Mount, recording three goals in the first period alone.
Marist led by one heading into the second period. The second period played out the same as the first with the Red Foxes outsourcing the Mount and maintaining their lead by one.
The Mount struggled to keep up with the Red Foxes depth and pace of play after the half.
The game was broken open in the third where Marist outscored The Mount 5-2, with two goals coming from sophomore attack Kendell De Beer to record a hat trick.
The Mount attempted a late push scoring two goals in the fourth, but their efforts proved not to be enough against junior goalie Ines Sanchez who ended the matchup with five saves.
The Red Foxes second game of play came against fellow MAAC school Iona. The Gaels were first to find the back of the net at the 6:45 mark from sophomore utility Kaitlyn Williams.
Marist then went on a four goal run, with junior utility Paige Naegle recording all four goals for the Red Foxes.
The second period proved to be a constant even matchup, with both sides recording four goals in the period and Marist maintaining a two goal lead at 8-6.
The Red Foxes took a different approach than usual in this matchup in terms of goaltending. Starting junior goaltender Zoë Seaboch in net for the Red Foxes. Seaboch and Sanchez rotated each period and recorded four saves each in the game against Iona.
Iona came out of the half dominating the third period out scoring the Red Foxes 2-6 and gaining the lead for the first time of the matchup.
The Red Foxes attempted to make a late push in the fourth scoring three goals. Junior attack Lela McCarroll netted one for Marist with 45 seconds remaining pushing the Red Foxes back within one.
Graduate student goalie Lilly Morris recorded nine saves and one assist for the Gaels, providing a strong defensive front not allowing Marist to regain the lead. Iona answered twice in the fourth, coming out with the 14-13 victory over the Red Foxes.
Marist will continue MAAC play on Saturday, April 5 in Villanova, Pennsylvania. Having their first game against the Virginia Military Institute at 9 a.m. and continuing play against Villanova at 1 p.m.
