Women’s Lacrosse: Stagnant Red Fox Second Half Leads to Siena Win

The Marist Red Foxes (2-3 conference, 3-10 overall) fell flat in the second half against the Siena Saints (5-8 conference, 3-2 overall), who defeated Marist 18-5 in the I-87 rivalry.

The Red Foxes racked up 17 total turnovers as the Saints outscored the Red Foxes 14-1 in the second half,  consequently dealing Marist their third conference loss of the season.

The Marist offense only scored five goals, but one bright spot in the offense was junior midfielder Jesse Manger, who poured in two goals and two assists. The rising contributor for the Red Foxes has 13 points in her last three games, with a shot percentage greater than .500 on the season.

The Saints’ offense had a season-high 18 goals led by sophomore attack Olivia Nicholson and senior attack Kelly Logue, who both tallied four apiece.

The Red Foxes began the first half with an effective opening possession that concluded with a wide-open shot for Jesse Manger, giving Marist a 1-0 lead. The Saints responded a few possessions later, following a great cut and goal from Olivia Nicholson, which tied the score at 1.

The score remained tied for the next five minutes with a goal from Marist’s junior midfielder Catlin McNaboe off a great pass from Manger and a free-position goal from the Saints’ sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Wamp.

Both teams couldn’t find the back of the net to end the quarter. Sophomore goalie Megan Morris had four saves for the Red Foxes in the quarter while freshman goalie Salter McAllister had two for the Saints.

The Saints ignited in the second quarter, scoring two goals in a little over a minute from sophomore midfielder Cassidy Bonura and redshirt freshman attack Nieman Koehler to double up Marist 4-2.

The Red Fox finally broke through the Saint’s strong defense to cut the lead down to one. Sophomore midfielder Catherine Winsdor scored her tenth goal of the season on a cross-body shot, keeping the Marist momentum going and tying the score at 4-4 thanks to sophomore attack Anne Shine’s goal off of Manger’s second assist of the game.

In the second half, the Saints came out of the locker room with three straight goals in under four minutes to take a 7-4 lead, with goals coming from Nicholson, Koehler and sophomore midfielder Lauren O’Hagan.

The Red Foxes pulled back within two as Manger used her speed to run through the Saints’ defense, allowing her to score her 19th goal on the season.

Despite Manger’s efforts, the Saints punctured the Red Fox defense, taking a 10-5 lead with two goals from Nicholson and one from Bonura. The Saints continued their dominance in the third quarter as Logue launched a missile past Morris, extending the lead to six.

The Saints ramped up their attack by scoring seven unanswered fourth-quarter goals. Logue had a hat trick in the fourth quarter alone, helping the bombardment of scoring from the Siena side.

The Red Foxes will return to Poughkeepsie on Saturday, April 12, looking to grab their third conference win against the No. 1 Mount St Mary’s. Face-off is scheduled for noon at Tenney Stadium.
