Marist men’s lacrosse (7-7, 5-3 MAAC) wrapped up their regular season on the road at Siena (9-4, 7-1 MAAC) with a 24-9 loss. Marist finished as the No. 4 in the MAAC and hosts No. 5 Manhattan on Sunday, April 27.
Siena came into the game on a six-game winning streak and finished the year with a tie for the MAAC regular-season title.
Three different Saints scored hat-tricks and ten found the net. Senior attacker Pratt Reynolds and junior attacker Travis Fry scored five each and senior attacker Conor Hufnagel scored four but assisted on a fifth. Sophomore midfielder Patrick Radomski scored three times to round out the Saints’ barrage.
For Marist, sophomore attacker Collin Patrick scored twice and assisted one, while junior midfielder Drew Anderson and sophomore attacker Steven Cain each scored two. That sums up the bright spots for Marist, who conceded a new season-high in goals (Air Force scored 23 on Marist earlier in the year)
Siena graduate student goalie Andrew Arcuri saved 15 shots, while three different Marist goalies combined for 11 saves.
Freshman Adam Wacholder started the game, as he has most of Marist’s MAAC games, but was pulled after conceding eight goals on nine shots in the first.
Senior Noble Smith got the second, although he barely did better. Three saves and eight conceded meant head coach Dave Scarcello put senior Bryant O’Donnell in for the second half. O’Donnell had a good 30 minutes, conceding eight while saving a team-high seven.
Going into the game, both teams knew the face-off spot would be huge. Freshman Logan Banek came in third in Division 1 in faceoff percentage (.656) while senior Dylan Bedell sat 10th in Division 1 for Marist (.614). Banek ended up winning the battle, getting 20 of his 33 faceoffs.
Siena’s offensive outburst resulted in their most goals since 1982, as mentioned on the ESPN+ broadcast.
The win for the Saints gives them their second win in a row over Marist. Siena snapped a nine-game losing streak in the series last season after beating Marist at Tenney Stadium in the quarterfinals of the MAAC playoffs.
Marist’s poor offensive outing was more about great goalkeeping rather than poor shooting. Marist put 24 shots on target out of 48, both numbers above their season averages.
Siena, on the other hand, made great use of Marist’s poor goalkeeping performance and Banek’s dominant faceoff game. 35 of 50 shots got on target proved too many for the Red Foxes’ defense.
Siena gets a week off before their semi-final game, where they will face the winner of the quarterfinal game between Marist and Manhattan.
A Marist win over Manhattan would mean a rematch and a renewal of this great rivalry, with this edition being played on neutral ground.
Sacred Heart tied for the MAAC regular season title alongside Siena, but due to SHU winning their head-to-head matchup, the Pioneers will host the semi-finals and championship game.
Marist needs to get through the Jaspers, whom they beat to 14-10 earlier this year. That game will be at Tenney Stadium on Sunday, April 27, with the time still TBD.
