Balcarcel Joins PLL’s California Redwoods

Graduate student midfielder Joshua Balcarcel has accepted a training camp invite for the California Redwoods of the Professional Lacrosse League (PLL), Marist men’s lacrosse announced in an Instagram post.

Balcarcel, a two-year team captain and 2024 points leader, spent his entire collegiate career at Marist and tallied 77 goals and 50 assists.

In his junior year, Balcarcel dominated the 2023 MAAC playoffs after scoring 21 goals and 12 assists in the regular season. He scored a hat-trick in the MAAC semifinal and championship as Marist beat Siena to claim the title.

Balcarcel recorded team highs in goals (30) and assists (21) in his senior year, but Marist ultimately went on to be eliminated by Siena in the quarterfinals at home, ending their season.

Marist and Siena clashed in the MAAC semifinals in 2025, in which Balcarcel scored and assisted once apiece. He finished with 18 goals and 14 assists in what was a quieter yet productive final season. Six multi-goal games, four of which in conference play, highlighted his year.

Balcarcel is not the first former Red Fox to have a stint with the Redwoods: 2020 graduate Peyton Smith was drafted 6th overall by the Redwoods and has been a faceoff man around the league since.

The Redwoods had a disappointing 2024 season, going 3-7. A three-game losing streak to start the campaign and a 1-3 stretch to end it left a lot to be desired.

The Redwoods made five selections in this year’s draft, including midfielders Andrew McAdorey from Duke and Sam English from Syracuse with the 2nd and 3rd picks.

Attacker Chris Kavanagh out of Notre Dame fell to the Redwoods at the 10th pick, and short stick defensive midfielder Carter Rice, also out of Syracuse (29th pick) and midfielder Griffin Schutz of Virginia (31st pick) rounded out their draft.

The Redwoods didn’t get a lot of production from their midfielders in 2024, leading to four draft picks at that position for 2025. Balcarcel will look to use his quick dodges and smart passing to impress head coach Anthony Kelly and earn a roster spot.

The PLL and Redwoods’ season opens Friday, May 30.
