Marist women’s soccer broke a program record Wednesday night, drawing 0-0 against the Fairfield Stags, extending their unbeaten streak to seven games.
Despite facing 30 shots from the reigning MAAC champions, the Red Foxes remain unbeaten in conference play and find themselves in a four-way tie for first place in the MAAC, with Quinnipiac, Canisius and Sacred Heart
The Stags took down the Red Foxes last year in regular-season play in a 3-0 shutout and went on to win the MAAC championship.
Fairfield had their best record in university history last year, claiming their first MAAC title and NCAA Tournament appearance in over a decade. They also accomplished a perfect 13-0 record at home at Lessing Field.
Heading into the 2025 season, the Stags were named MAAC Preseason favorites, having four pre-season All-MAAC players, as well as the unanimous MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, Maddy Theriault.
Fairfield’s senior forward received the 2024 MAAC Golden Boot and Championship MVP. Theriault ended last season with 13 goals and six assists. This year, the All-MAAC player has earned seven goals and two assists over 10 games.
The Marist defense shut down Theriault, rendering her unable to make plays and take shots.
The Stags played a relentless brand of offense, getting off 19 shots in the first half with four on target. The Red Foxes had little to no chances to move their offense forward, ending the half with two shots and zero set pieces.
Fairfield took nine corners in the first half, with the Marist defense shutting down each opportunity.
Senior forward Alex Darcy, who scored last year against Marist, pushed the Red Fox defense with constant attempts within the box after coming off the bench.
In the 28th minute, freshman forward Ella Bryan stepped onto the goal line and headed the ball out of play.
Seven minutes into the second half, Marist made its first offensive push of the game with sophomore forward Gabby Tirado on a fast break alone, getting trapped along the sideline by the Fairfield defense.
The Red Foxes gained more offensive possession in the first ten minutes of the second half than in the entire first 45 minutes. Remaining in a strong defensive position, pressuring the Fairfield offense into taking high and wide, inaccurate shots.
Senior defender Julia Loncar led the shutdown of the Fairfield offense, cutting down lanes and making strong defensive tackles.
The shots that made their way on target all got collected by senior goalie Maddy Catalanotti, who ended the game with five saves. Catalanotti has a .673 save percentage over the 2025 season. With eight minutes left, Catalanotti made full-body, back-to-back saves.
Fairfield’s senior goalie Katie Wright also recorded five saves in the contest. Wright leads the MAAC with the highest save percentage of .750.
Marist played a stronger second half, holding the Stags to 10 shots compared to the 20 in the first half. Offensively, the Red Foxes recorded five shots with three on target.
With the draw, Marist improves to 3-0-3 in MAAC play, the Red Foxes’ best start since 2018. Marist looks to extend the streak, ideally with a win, at home in Poughkeepsie on Wednesday at 2 p.m. against Quinnipiac.
