At the professional level, the Marist football program has not had a lot to hang its hat on. Now, they have a Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl record holder.
Kicker Jason Myers, who graduated from Marist in 2013, went 5/5 on his field goal attempts in the Seahawks’ 29-13 win, setting an NFL record for most made field goals (5) and most points scored by a kicker (17) in a Super Bowl.
An unlikely journey brought Myers to the grandest stage in American sports, and the 34-year-old kicker delivered. He broke the ice with a 33-yarder in the first quarter to get the Seahawks on the board, before he added two more in the second quarter. Myers’ 41-yard make on Seattle’s first drive of the second half tied him for the most field goals ever made in a Super Bowl.
While Myers enjoyed a perfect game to that point, the Seahawks had struggled to convert on the Patriots’ side of the field. Myers’ four field goals were the only points in the game; the 12-0 advantage was still well within reach for New England.
Curiously, Myers was not listed as an option for fans to vote for to win the Super Bowl MVP when voting opened at the end of the third quarter, despite being the only contributor to the scoreboard for either team.
Seattle momentarily put the game out of reach early in the fourth; Derick Hall forced a fumble from Drake Maye at the Patriots’ 44-yard line, and the Seahawks recovered. Sam Darnold promptly led Seattle down the field and hit A.J. Barner for a 16-yard touchdown strike.
The Patriots answered with a quick touchdown drive and forced a Seahawks punt, but Maye threw an interception to wipe away any sliver of hope the Patriots had left. When Seahawks star wide receiver Jackson Smith-Njigba got tackled short of the chains on third down on Seattle’s ensuing drive, Myers trotted out for a chip shot, where he wrote his name into the NFL record book.
Still, Myers was not finished. The Seahawks forced another fumble on Maye, and this time Uchenna Nwosu returned it for a touchdown – meaning Myers had to head back on the field to kick the extra point. It was center cut; the extra point gave Myers 17 kicking points on the night, another Super Bowl record.
It left him at 206 points on the entire season, marking the most in NFL history. Even as their most famous alumnus, Myers is not the only name etched in Marist football’s record book. In Sunday night’s win, he set three separate NFL records, a culminating evening in an already phenomenal career.
