Marist Crushed by Mount St. Mary’s in Largest Loss Since 2010

Mount St. Mary’s women’s lacrosse dominated Marist all afternoon on Wednesday, handing the Red Foxes a whopping 18-1 loss. The loss is Marist’s largest since a 22-3 defeat against Florida in 2010 and marks the first time the Red Foxes scored just one goal since a 2001 loss to Rutgers.

The Marist (2-8, 1-1 MAAC) offense only had nine turnovers in their 10-8 win against Rider on Saturday. Against the Mountaineers (6-4, 2-0 MAAC), the Red Foxes turned the ball over 11 times in the first half alone. The only success was on the defensive end as Marist forced 13 takeaways and won the ground ball margin 18-14.  Sophomore defender Taija Bell led the way with three ground ball pickups.

The Mountaineers had nine different goal scorers in the game, including hat-tricks from sophomore midfielder Brooke Molchanoff and freshman attack Haylee Bittinger. They also dominated the draw control 16-4.

In the opening five minutes, neither offense found a rhythm as both defenses forced three turnovers to begin the contest. Mount St. Mary’s scored the first goal of the day, converting on Marist’s third turnover as Bittinger found herself all alone to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 advantage.

The Mountaineers’ defense continued to cause turnovers as senior midfielder Hailey Chester intercepted a Red Fox pass and took the ball the length of the field, forcing a foul. She then put in her fourth goal of the season from the eight-meter line. The Mountaineers continued to score at will, gaining a 4-0 lead with goals from freshman attack Addie Penti and senior midfielder MK Allingham.

The Red Foxes’ offense only attempted three shots on goal and made sloppy passes, leading to seven turnovers in the first quarter. In the second quarter, The Mount continued to dominate on both ends. The Marist defense fell asleep on back-to-back possessions, leaving the Mountaineers’ top goal scorer, Molchanoff, wide open for two straight scores.

Mount St. Mary’s continued to pour it on, extending their lead to 10-0, with four goals to close the first half.

In the second half, it was more of the same on offense. Molchanoff got things started with her fourth goal of the day, and the Mount closed the third quarter with a 14-0 advantage. Junior goalie Camille Thomas finished her afternoon giving up no goals and adding seven saves.

Both teams emptied their benches in the fourth quarter, and freshman goalie Becca Mullinix made her first appearance for the Mountaineers. Marist took advantage, finally breaking through as freshman midfielder Leigha Zaman converted, scoring through Mount St. Mary’s double team. The Mountaineers responded, scoring four goals in the quarter, notching their largest win of the season.

The Red Foxes will return home on Saturday to host Iona. Faceoff is set for 1 pm.
