It was a beautiful day on Long Island, but Marist’s comeback bid fell short as it dropped a 14-11 decision to Stony Brook.
The game against the Seawolves, who play in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA), offered the Red Foxes a break from conference play, where they hold a 4-1 record against MAAC opponents. With three games to play, Marist is tied for second in the conference.
The first quarter featured runs by both teams in a back-and-forth start. For Stony Brook, junior attackman Justin Bonacci got the scoring started with two quick goals, giving the Seawolves an early 2-0 lead. He finished an impressive afternoon with three goals and three assists, both team highs.
The Red Foxes responded with three goals of their own to take a 3-2 lead. One came from sophomore defensive midfielder Dylan Rocchio, marking his first goal of the season.
After Marist took the lead, Stony Brook answered. The Seawolves closed the first quarter with two late goals and opened the second with three straight, building a 7-3 advantage. Freshman goalie Richie Metzger struggled, finishing with a .333 save percentage.
With Marist on the ropes as halftime approached, they scored two late goals to stay within striking distance. Senior midfielder Drew Anderson beat the buzzer with just three seconds remaining, sending the Red Foxes into the locker room trailing by two.
Stony Brook came out aggressive again in the third quarter, scoring two quick goals to extend its lead to 9-5. Playing from behind most of the game, Marist faced a tough climb, but senior midfielder Peter Murray found the back of the net to make it 9-6 heading into the fourth.
Marist has been resilient all season when its back is against the wall, and it showed again with a four-goal run to tie the game at 10. Murray added another during the run, finishing with a team-high three goals.
Sophomore attackman Brady Dolan scored the game-tying goal and finished with two. After both teams traded goals, the score was tied at 11 with just over seven minutes remaining.
Marist looked poised for another late surge but couldn’t capitalize. Stony Brook senior goalie Tommy Wilk made several key saves, stopping 13 of 24 shots.
The Seawolves took advantage, scoring three straight late goals to seal the victory. With just over three minutes remaining, sophomore midfielder Tanner Williams scored what proved to be the game-winner.
Stony Brook improved to 6-4 with the win, while Marist fell to 6-4. The Red Foxes will continue their road trip against Manhattan on Saturday, with the first whistle set for 7 p.m.
