The Red Foxes hit the road to face Canisius to wrap up their regular season and took care of business with a 15-13 win. It was not the prettiest game for Marist, but they escaped with the victory and now shift their focus to the playoffs.
Early on, Marist played from behind, trailing 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2. Eventually, the Red Foxes tied the game at four after a goal from freshman attackman Jayce Konowitz and never trailed again.
As the second quarter began, Marist took its first lead at 5-4 after a goal by junior attackman Collin Patrick. Patrick concluded his regular season with an excellent performance, leading the team with four goals while adding an assist.
Canisius responded minutes later with a goal from graduate student attackman TJ Buono. Buono matched Patrick with four goals and was the catalyst for the Canisius offense.
As the teams began to trade goals, senior midfielder Drew Anderson scored two straight for Marist, giving the Red Foxes a 7-6 lead. Anderson’s goal sparked a five-goal run to close the half, and Marist entered the locker room with a 10-7 lead.
During that run, Anderson scored his third of the quarter and finished the game with a hat trick.
Defensively, the Red Foxes tightened up late in the half. Freshman goalie Richie Metzger led the way between the pipes and was sensational, recording 16 saves and finishing with a .552 save percentage.
As the third quarter began, Marist came out flat. The Red Foxes got outscored 5-2 in the quarter, and the game was tied at 12 heading into the fourth. Canisius sophomore midfielder Dawson Wade scored with six seconds remaining in the third to even the score.
With momentum slipping away, Marist found a spark through junior midfielder Sean Mullan, who scored less than three minutes into the fourth to regain the lead. Minutes later, junior attackman Steven Cain extended the advantage to two.
Canisius made it a one-goal game late, but fittingly, senior Peter Murray, in his final regular-season game, found the back of the net on a high bouncer to seal it.
Marist went on to win 15-13, concluding another strong regular season. The Red Foxes finish as the No. 2 seed in the MAAC playoffs and will play April 30 in the semifinals against either Sacred Heart, Merrimack or Quinnipiac.
Marist closes the regular season with a 9-4 overall record and a 7-1 mark in MAAC play.
