After winning their 10th consecutive set of the season, Marist volleyball dropped its third Metro Conference game to rival Siena in four sets.
Coming into tonight, Marist had won nine straight sets, including their first two conference games over Rider and Saint Peter’s. Before winning those three matches, Marist was 5-8. They now sit at 7-9 overall and 2-1 in conference.
This stretch had been strong for sophomore outside hitter Malory Reck, who earned Metro Player of the Week for her three games, in which she recorded 41 kills, 22 digs, and 54 points overall.
Reck continued her dominant play, recording 25 kills, 15 digs, and 29 points in Tuesday’s match. The Red Foxes’ second-leading scorer was senior right-side hitter Trinity Woods with 12.5 points.
Siena now moves to 7-8 on the season and 2-1 in conference. They got their first Metro win on Saturday over Rider.
Senior libero Brooke Malek has been one of the highlights of the season for the Saints. She has won two straight Metro Libero of the Week awards, with 77 digs over five games.
The Red Foxes won the first set tonight, 25-20. After trading points early, Marist broke away fast; the Saints never came within three after going down 7-4. Reck led the team that set with four kills.
Marist struggled to hit after that set. They hit .323 in the first, before hitting .228 the rest of the way, to go .235 overall. Siena also hit .235, but struggled in the first, hitting .256.
Siena controlled the rest of the sets, but Marist stayed in it until the end. In the second, the two teams went back and forth and went into extra points, where Siena won 27-25 after an error by Reck.
For the Saints, their junior outside hitter Gabrielle Wire led the team in scoring with 20 points.
The third set was the most lopsided of the night for Siena, as they won 25-22, and never trailed after Marist went up 6-4.
In the final set, Siena’s sophomore outside hitter Brianna Miller made the highlight of the night when she dove to bump the ball after it tipped the net off a Marist serve. The Saints recovered to volley it over and go up 13-11.
Marist still fought, going on a three-point run to tie the game at 23, before Siena put the game away. The Saint’s preseason All-Metro right-side sophomore Mary Claire Deacy killed it for the final point.
This weekend, Marist will host their first Metro home games, starting with Iona on Friday night.
