Marist women’s soccer downed Rider 2-0 at Tenney Stadium on Saturday night for the team’s seventh conference win. The Red Foxes (7-8-1, 7-3-1 Metro) have now won back-to-back games and sit third in the Metro standings. Rider (4-9-1, 3-8-0 Metro) were eliminated from the postseason before the match.
Goals from junior forward Ariana Mullin and sophomore midfielder Mia Katchouni, both of which came in the second half, gave Marist the win.
“These past few games, I’m in front of the goal. I just calmed down. I know how to score a goal,” said Mullin
Marist entered off the back of an absolute nail-biter victory against Iona. Junior midfielder Julia Oliveira scored an equalizer in the 88th minute before Mullin scored the game-winner in the 89th minute with just 20 seconds remaining in the match
The opening minutes of this contest were very quiet, with neither team getting a shot off until the 15th minute.
Marist finally created some opportunity midway through the first half. Katchouni had a great opportunity with a header right in front of the net in the 20th minute, but was denied.
Junior defender Caroline Liptak’s corner a few minutes later created a pinball situation right in front of the net, but Marist didn’t capitalize. Marist continued to pile on the pressure, though, as sophomore forward Ella Bryan got a good look in the 25th minute. She couldn’t keep the shot on frame, and the match remained goalless.
Rider finally responded in the 26th minute when junior forward Noa Menzing got the first shot on goal for the match. Just four minutes later, junior forward Tess Ferrie created another great opportunity but sent her shot over the crossbar.
Despite putting on a lot of pressure, the Red Foxes entered halftime with a 0-0 score. The Red Foxes outshot the Broncs five to two and took all three of the game’s corners.
Marist came out of the break on fire, though, with two goals in the first quarter of an hour.
Mullin converted a chance from junior midfielder Margaret Johnson in the 51st minute, with the goal standing after a review for a handball.
Katchouni doubled the lead just seven minutes later, her third of the season.
“I think I realized we needed to score,” said Katchouni. “Any team can beat anyone in the Metro. Nothing is guaranteed.”
Marist kept the pressure on even while up two, looking to extend the lead and secure the win.
Ferrie nearly put Rider back in it with a good look, but the attempt was smothered by junior goalkeeper Samantha Graf.
Marist has just one more game in the regular season, a road match at Siena on Wednesday. Both teams are in playoff positions, but haven’t confirmed their spots. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
