Marist women’s soccer (2-8-2, 2-4-1 MAAC Conference) was unable to find any offensive answers against Quinnipiac (8-2-1, 6-0 MAAC), as they went scoreless for the fifth consecutive game, losing 3-0.
Quinnipiac controlled possession for much of the first half, with all three goals coming in the initial frame. They led in total shots 13 to nine, shots on net six to four and in corner kicks seven to four.
The first and best opportunity of the game for Marist came in the 11th minute, when senior defender Bella Lazzaro sent in a free kick which went over the defense and found junior midfielder Olivia Lindsay. Lindsay chipped it over graduate student goalkeeper Sofia Lospinoso for the apparent goal, however the celebration for Marist was quickly ended after the whistle blew for offsides, removing the goal for the Red Foxes.
The Bobcats then quickly got into a groove, as sophomore defender Bianca D’Onofrio sent a cross into the box that found graduate student forward Courtney Chochol who sent it into the net to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead. Chochol remains the leading goal scorer for the Bobcats, notching her fifth goal of the season on the play.
In the 19th minute, graduate student midfielder/forward and leading goal scorer for Marist Maille McDermott went down injured after an awkward slide as she attempted to make a tackle. McDermott was helped off the field and did not return in the contest.
Just a minute later, the Bobcats were able to cash in on a corner kick. Senior midfielder Ella Gagno put a shot on net that junior goalkeeper Maddy Catalanotti was initially able to deflect and save, but senior midfielder Aisling Spillane was sitting in the right spot for the rebound, as she powered it over the head of Catalanotti and in for a 2-0 lead.
Quinnipiac snagged their third goal of the first half in the 33rd minute, as Chochol was able to send a cross in just before it went out of bounds. The cross appeared to hit off junior defender/midfielder Julia Loncar and off the post, to where senior midfielder Rachel Roman was able to put it away on an open net, extending the Bobcats lead 3-0.
Quinnipiac led the shot category nine to two in what was a dominant first half for the Bobcats that had Marist pinned back on their own side of the field for a majority of the first 45 minutes.
Marist applied pressure early on in the second half, getting a few shots and a corner kick in the 50th minute. Quinnipiac did a good job limiting any of those chances and cleared the aforementioned corner kick rather quickly.
Marist had their best chance of the game in the 69th minute, as sophomore defender Kelsey Peduto ripped a shot on net but Lospinoso made a diving save. She pushed the ball to her right which found junior defender Emily Dovico, but she missed her shot wide right ending the opportunity for the Red Foxes.
Lospinoso ended the last Marist threat in the 83rd minute, as graduate student defender/midfielder Keegan Mayer sent in a cross to senior midfielder/forward Lauryn Schmidt. Schmidt got a good head on it but it went right into the arms of Lospinoso for her fourth save on the day, along with her 28th career shutout for Quinnipiac.
Marist will look to regroup in a home matchup against Niagara next Wednesday at 2 p.m.
