Marist women’s basketball lost mightily to Fairfield in every facet of the game on Jan. 11, suffering a 70-31 defeat and managing just eight points in the first half.
The eight points Marist scored in the first half is the lowest for the program this century. Their total of 31 points in the game is the fewest since they managed just 29 points against St. Peter’s on March 8, 2022. The last occasion the Red Foxes scored 10 or fewer points in a half was on February 23, 2017, when they tallied just 10 points in the first half against Quinnipiac.
The Red Foxes went 10-for-48 from the field with 20 total turnovers in the contest. Marist had no double-digit scorers in the game and made just one shot from beyond the arc.
Marist picked up where they left off in their previous game against Quinnipiac, struggling to make shots for the entirety of the first quarter. Marist went scoreless for over seven minutes in the opening frame, missing eight consecutive attempts from the field while committing four turnovers during the stretch.
Meanwhile, the Stags took advantage of the Red Foxes’ slow start, putting together a 14-0 run. Fairfield’s two leading scorers played a key role in the stretch: sophomore guard Katey L’Amoreaux and sophomore road runner Meghan Andersen. L’Amoreaux finished on two layups, one with a 3-point play after a foul, while Andersen cashed in from beyond the arc. The duo each finished with 5 points in the first quarter.
Marist finished with just four points in the first frame, going 2-for-12 from the field and 0-for-5 from beyond the arc. The Red Foxes found open shots but could not get them to fall, leading to the 17-4 deficit going into the second quarter.
It was a nearly identical second quarter for the Red Foxes, with the lid staying on the basket aside from junior center Morgan Lee’s first and only points. Marist faced a scoreless stretch of over seven minutes, missing all of their 11 shots in that span.
Junior guard Morgan Thompkins added the only other Red Fox points in the quarter with a layup, as Marist put up another four-point quarter. By halftime, the Red Foxes were shooting a measly 4-for-25 from the field and 0-for-9 from beyond the arc, along with nine team giveaways.
L’Amoreaux and Andersen capitalized once again, each sinking a 3-pointer in the second quarter. Andersen worked her way into double digits by the halftime break while L’Amoreaux had eight points and seven rebounds herself. Fairfield grabbed seven offensive rebounds as a team in the first half and went up 31-8.
The Stags capitalized on Red Fox turnovers in the third quarter, scoring 11 points off of six Marist giveaways in the first five minutes. Senior road runner Emina Selimovic delivered the first six points out of the half for the Stags to give herself 12 points.
Redshirt junior Lexie Tarul got her first points of the game on a layup with 6:16 remaining in the third quarter. Tarul had taken just two shots before that basket and went 1-for-4 in the game.
Sophomore guard Julia Corsentino finally delivered the first 3-pointer of the game for Marist, having missed their previous 11 attempts. The Red Foxes shot 50% from the field in the third quarter but limited themselves to just 10 attempts due to seven turnovers.
The Red Foxes reached 20 total turnovers at the 4:23 mark of the fourth quarter. Marist did not make a shot in the final frame until just under two minutes to go. Excluding the third quarter, the Red Foxes went 5-for-38 from the field [13 percent].
The Red Foxes had not allowed 70 points in a game this season until today, as Fairfield would cruise to the 39-point victory. Andersen led the way for the Stags with 16 points and Fairfield had four players in double figures.
Marist will attempt to put this game behind them before a home game against St. Peter’s on Thursday at 11 a.m.
