Men’s Club Hockey Coach LoBianco Hospitalized

Marist Men’s Club Hockey head coach Anthony LoBianco was hospitalized recently after experiencing a medical emergency. This emergency was caused by an “undiagnosed congenital gastrointestinal condition that caused a complete blockage” as stated on LoBianco’s GoFundMe page.

As a result, LoBianco underwent surgery and a lengthy hospital stay and is now continuing his recovery at home. LoBianco will be away from coaching for the time being as he focuses on his health.

His godmother, Judy, created a GoFundMe campaign attempting to raise $7,500 to help the family cover medical expenses and other costs associated with LoBianco’s recovery.

Center Field reached out to Marist Recreation for further comment, but is yet to hear back.

LoBianco was announced as the new head coach for his season, bringing 14 years of experience with him as he joined the program.

Before coming to Marist, LoBianco played at the third level of pro hockey for the Brewster Bulldogs, retiring in 2018. Since then, he has been coaching and training youth teams. When he was first hired his tenure got off rough: LoBianco wasn’t even allowed on the ice for the first night of tryouts.

But that did not matter. His team took on Division 1 program Rutgers in their first game and earned a shocking 3-2 shootout win.

The team then defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 7-2 in their home opener and split the Route 87 Cup Series with rivals Siena. His team finished the season 8-4 in Division 2.

Marist advanced to SECHL playoffs and hosted Clarkson in round 1. Clarkson secured a 6-2 victory, ending the Red Foxes season.

LoBianco took over for former head coach Randall Hurlbert, who transitioned this past offseason to a role as general manager. Hurlbert was the coach since 2016, leaving a sizable gap on the bench.

The hiring of LoBianco injected the club with a sense of intensity, consistency, and defense, as well as LoBianco’s well stated passion for the game.

As LoBianco recovers, he can have some time off to not worry about hockey, as the 2025-26 season still sits over six months away.
