Marist finished its opening-season, three-game road trip with an impressive 9–6 win over Binghamton to record its first victory of the season. The Red Foxes led from start to finish, performing well on both ends of the field.
Freshman goalie Richie Metzger made his second career start in net and shined, saving 16 of the 22 shots he faced. He has broken onto the scene in a big way and looks to be Marist’s answer in net for years to come.
On offense, Marist came out of the gate flying, leading 5–1 at the end of the first quarter. Once again, it was the Sean Mullan show he accounted for four of Marist’s nine goals. The junior midfielder is off to a scorching start, averaging four goals per game, tied for the best mark in the MAAC.
Redshirt freshman middie Mason Bader also added in on the fun, scoring his first career goal. Bader, who transferred this season from Rutgers, has been getting a lot of run on offense and has become another weapon for Marist.
Marist added two more in the second quarter and took a 7–2 lead into the locker room. Sophomore attackman Brady Dolan had one of those goals and finished the game with two. The North Carolina native has been getting the starting nod at one of the attack spots and took advantage of his opportunity.
In the second half, the Marist offense slowed, but the defense remained steady. For most of the third and fourth quarters, Binghamton had possession, but the defense led by graduate student defenseman Aiden McCaffrey did not allow much. Marist’s defenders forced 16 turnovers and were 18 for 20 on their clear attempts.
For Binghamton, junior attackman Andrew Giralomo and sophomore attackman Ryan Meyers each scored two goals to lead the Bearcats, but it wasn’t enough. Binghamton scored with just over five minutes remaining to make it a three-goal game, but Metzger stood on his head after that, allowing nothing more.
MAAC Preseason Player of the Year and junior attackman Colin Patrick added two goals and two assists, further demonstrating Marist’s offensive depth.
After two rough losses to begin the season, the Red Foxes finally got into the win column and will now head home to Poughkeepsie. They take on Air Force at 12 p.m. on Feb. 28, which promises to be a tough matchup that could bring them back to .500 on the season.
