Vermont had three different players record hat tricks in their 14-9 victory over the Red Foxes at Tenney Stadium. Senior attacker Jane Trauger, senior midfielder Lindsay Lefebvre and sophomore attacker Caitlin Haggerty each netted three goals in the Catamounts victory.
The Marist Red Foxes hosted the Vermont Catamounts in an out-of-conference women’s lacrosse matchup. This matchup, originally slated to be played in Burlington, Vermont, was moved to Poughkeepsie due to the field conditions.
With this, however, Vermont still played with the confidence of a home team. This game featured high-octane offense and a surplus of shot attempts, especially from the Vermont side, and an offensive explosion that Marist was not able to replicate.
Historically, the all-time series between these two had a slight edge toward Marist, but the result of the game knotted the series 8-8, and the first Catamount win since 2024.
The first quarter included an offensive onslaught on Vermont, starting with a Karina Sethi goal, the junior attacker’s fourth of the season, and set an early tone of what was to come. Marist, however, did respond quickly through junior midfielder Madison Leale, who was assisted by senior attacker Jesse Manger.
The Catamounts were adamant on not allowing the momentum to fully shift. Junior midfielder Lydia Doraz, a Preseason All-Conference selection for Vermont, found Trauger to lead by one. This pair would go on to be a problem for Marist. At the end of the first, Vermont led 2-1, and outshot Marist 8-4.
The intensity swiftly ramped up in the second quarter, as Trauger scored an unassisted goal to open. Marist’s junior midfielder/attacker Annie Shine prevented the game from slipping away, scoring to limit Vermont’s halftime lead to 5-3.
While previously being considered a first-half team, Marist came out of the half looking to demolish that narrative. Marist scored within the first 30 seconds, and then less than two minutes later, they scored again. Unfortunately for Marist, their agenda-breaking effort slowly tailed off.
Haggarty and Lefebvre both scored off of feeds from Doraz. Every time Marist scored, Vermont seemed to have an answer. Vermont outscored Marist 5-4 in the third, as the scoreboard read 10-7 entering the fourth quarter.
Vermont then had the best ten-minute stretch of the game, a 4-0 run that extinguished any hope of a Marist comeback, as Lefebvre completed her hat trick early in the quarter. Doraz put the finishing touches on her performance, scoring back-to-back goals. Marist showed life late with goals from Shine and Manger, but it was too little, too late.
Despite strong play from sophomore midfielder Amelia Pirozzi and junior attacker Kathyrn Staker, who both came off hat tricks in their previous time out, Marist now drops to 1-2 in non-conference play; they have a chance to even their record in their upcoming game, hosting Hofstra at Tenney Stadium on Wednesday.
