After blowing a lead earlier in the game on Saturday, Marist held on for a thrilling 10-9 overtime win over Merrimack. Marist attackman Collin Patrick set up the game-winner, finding an open Steven Cain on the crease; Cain buried the shot to seal the victory.
Offensively, the Red Foxes had the ball moving all day and had seven different goal scorers account for their 10 goals. After falling behind 1-0 early, freshman attackman Jayce Konowitz answered immediately to tie the game.
Merrimack responded to regain a 2-1 lead, but Marist captain and senior midfielder Drew Anderson fired a shot down the right alley to even the score at two. From that point on, Marist never trailed again.
The Red Foxes went on to score six unanswered goals and eventually built an 8-3 lead with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter. Sophomore attackman Brady Dolan led the charge with two goals during the stretch, while Anderson added another.
After freshman midfielder Simon Bowen gave Marist its 8-3 lead late in the third quarter, it looked as if the Red Foxes might run away with the game. Up to that point, Merrimack had struggled to generate offensive opportunities. However, junior attackman Colin Kruger found the back of the net late in the third to make it 8-4 and give the Warriors some momentum heading into the fourth quarter.
Merrimack carried that momentum into the final period. The Warriors came out flying, and for the first time all game, Marist looked flat defensively. Merrimack scored the first three goals of the quarter, cutting the deficit to 8-7 with 6:30 remaining.
With momentum slipping away, Marist turned to its star: Patrick. He corralled a loose ball and finally beat Merrimack freshman goalie Jessie D’Alonzo, who finished with 15 saves. Patrick’s goal pushed the Marist lead to 9-7 with just over three minutes remaining.
Merrimack refused to go away. Sophomore midfielder John Savino responded quickly with a goal for the Warriors, and with just 11 seconds remaining, sophomore midfielder Finn Dougherty scored his second goal of the game to tie it at nine. It was the first time the game had been even since the 2-2 score at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams returned to the field for overtime, where sophomore faceoff specialist Josh Smith won the crucial draw to give Marist possession. The Red Foxes quickly called a timeout.
After holding the ball for more than a minute while searching for an opening, Patrick beat his defender with a slick move and delivered a perfect pass to Cain, who called game.
Marist escaped with the 10-9 victory, improving to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in MAAC play while extending its winning streak to four games. Merrimack fell to 1-7 and remains winless in conference play.
Marist returns home next Saturday to face Iona and will look to extend its winning streak.
