Marist Water Polo Winning Streak Extends to 10 games After Dominant Victory at Siena

The No. 18-ranked Marist Red Foxes defeated Siena 20-9 on Wednesday night at the Siena Swim Center to increase their win streak to 10 games and continue their dominant season.

In a rematch from the Marist season opener, the Red Foxes and the Saints’ seasons have gone in very different directions.

The Red Foxes entered the game with an overall season record of 21-4 with marquee victories against No. 10 Fresno State, No. 19 San Diego State and No. 20 University of the Pacific. The Red Foxes also went into this matchup holding the one seed in the MAAC standings with a 5-0 record in conference play.

The Saints, on the other hand, have battled through much more adversity heading into the contest with an overall record of 6-8 and a chance to get their first victory over a ranked opponent this season.

The Marist offense put pressure on the Saints’ defense early. Junior attacker Kendall De Beer drew a penalty shot, which she buried to give the Red Foxes a 1-0 lead at the 6:18 mark.

Quincy Frommelt, junior center forward for the Saints, responded with two goals of her own, less than two minutes apart, to put Siena up 2-1.

The lead was short-lived, however, as senior utility player Makaelee Hansberger found the back of the net with 3:03 remaining in the period, tying the game at two and sparking a run for the Red Foxes.

Marist capitalized on the momentum and flashed its impressive depth with goals scored by three different players: junior utility player Alyssa Mullane, freshman Madilyn Ekstrom and junior attacker Emily Scheerer, all found the back of the net, guiding Marist to a 5-2 lead at the end of the first period.

The Red Foxes carried the first-period momentum over. Senior utility player Paige Naegle extended the lead to 6-2 at 7:11. De Beer followed it up with her second goal of the game to make it a five-point game with 5:47 remaining before the half.

Despite what appeared to be turning into a blowout, Siena continued to rally behind junior attacker Catherine Williamson, who scored a hat trick in the second period alone.

The offense for the Red Foxes remained consistent with goals from freshman Claudia Micheli, junior Anita Radaelli, and Scheerer to take a 10-6 lead into halftime.

The third quarter proved to be pivotal in the outcome.

Capitalizing on several Siena shots ringing off the post, and strong play from senior goaltender Ines Sanchez, who made several key saves at point-blank range, the Marist offense blew the game wide open.

Senior attacker Lela McCarroll kick-started the quarter with a goal at 7:03, and Naegle followed with a power-play goal at 6:07 to push the lead to 12–6. The Red Foxes found success by forcing sophomore goaltender Savana Slaughter to overextend, creating easy opportunities to float the ball over her as opposed to beating her with speed.

The immense pressure that the Marist offense applied created a penalty shot opportunity for freshman Jolanta Szentpali, who buried the penalty shot. De Beer completed the hat trick with 0:43 left in the period to cap off a dominant period to the Red Foxes, who then held a 15-6 lead entering the final frame.

The Marist offense again found the back of the net five times in the fourth quarter to maintain the double-digit lead until the final horn sounded, and the Red Foxes took home a 20-9 victory.

The victory pushed Marist’s overall record to 22-4 in the season and maintained its undefeated record in conference play.

The Red Foxes will jump in the pool next on Saturday, with two matches. The first against La Salle University and the second against Long Island University
