Two late goals by Mullan lift Marist over Quinnipiac

In a back-and-forth game, Marist outlasted Quinnipiac on the road to pick up a 13-12 win. It was not pretty for Marist for most of the game, but when it mattered most, they made crucial plays to secure the win.

Marist got off to a sluggish start as Quinnipiac scored two quick goals to jump out to an early lead. The Red Foxes cut the lead in half with a score by sophomore faceoff specialist Josh Smith. The Bobcats responded, scoring two more to end the quarter with a 4-1 lead.

To start the second quarter, Marist scored two quick goals to once again cut the lead in half. Senior attack Peter Murray converted on the first, followed by junior attackman Colin Patrick, who also had three assists in the game.

Quinnipiac answered quickly with a goal, but Marist exploded for three straight goals to take its first lead of the game at 6-5. Junior midfielder Sean Mullan started the run and finished the game tied for a game-high three goals.

With time winding down in the half, Quinnipiac scored with just 10 seconds remaining to tie the game at 6 heading into the break.

As the third quarter began, the Bobcats took advantage of some sloppy Marist defense. The Red Foxes committed seven turnovers in the quarter, and Quinnipiac made them pay, outscoring Marist 5-2 to take an 11-8 lead, matching its largest lead of the afternoon.

During that run, junior attackman Nate Watson and junior midfielder Nick Meoni each scored two goals and finished with a hat trick each.

With Marist down by three entering the fourth quarter, they needed a comeback — and that’s exactly what it got. Marist scored the first four goals of the quarter, including two in a span of seven seconds. Following a goal from Murray, Smith won the faceoff, sprinted down the middle of the field and tied the game at 11.

A few minutes later, Mullan gave Marist its first lead since it was 6-5. Patrick delivered a perfect feed, and Mullan buried the shot. Moments later, Quinnipiac responded with the equalizer from freshman attackman Duncan Zielke.

With the game tied at 12 and just minutes remaining, Mullan delivered again. He ripped a shot into the net for what proved to be the game-winner.

Quinnipiac had a few chances late, but freshman goalie Richie Metzger came up with two key saves to seal the Red Fox win.

Marist improved to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in MAAC play. Quinnipiac fell to 2-8 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
