Marist Baseball Clinches Berth in MAAC Championship

Marist baseball (23-28, 17-13 MAAC) clinched a berth in the MAAC Baseball Championship following Quinnipiac’s loss to Merrimack on Friday. Official seeding will be announced by the MAAC following the conclusion of regular season play.

After Canisius swept Siena this week to match the Red Foxes’ record, Marist simply needed Merrimack to take one of its three games from Quinnipiac to secure a spot in the field. A Quinnipiac sweep would have resulted in a four-way tie between Marist, Quinnipiac, Merrimack and Canisius for the final three spots in the field—in that situation, Marist would have been the odd team out following the MAAC’s tiebreaker procedures.

Despite a hot start in which Marist began the season 13-5 in MAAC play, the Red Foxes stumbled down the stretch to a 4-8 finish. They gave up three more runs per game during those final 12 games than in the 18 before it, as the slide forced them towards the edge of the playoff picture, which is once again six teams following a brief one-year expansion to eight teams last season.

After an exciting run saw Marist win three games as the No. 7 seed last year at Clover Stadium, the Red Foxes will look to go on another run as the MAAC Championship returns to Heritage Financial Park in Wappingers Falls, NY, for the first time since 2016. The double-elimination tournament begins on Wednesday.
